As-received cement sample
X-ray microtomography of a cement sample. The pores originated in the sample preparation are clearly visible. This video should be compared to the “Thermal treated cement sample” video.
Thermal treated cement sample
X-ray microtomography of a cement sample after thermal treatment at 450 C.. Both pores, originated in the sample preparation, and cracks generated by thermal stress, are clearly visible. This video should be compared to the “As-received cement sample” video.
Underwater Wet Weld
A steel joint obtained with underwater wet welding at 20 m depth, showing extensive porosity. Sample size = 2 cm. Resolution = 16 µm.
Stone Column
A reduced model of a stone column is tomographed to analyze the penetration of fine clay particles into the porous space. Image obtained with x-ray microtomography (Zeiss XRadia Versa 510 XRM).
3D Printed Shell
The shell was printed in a 3D metal printer (laser sintering) and tomographed to reveal the structure and defects. Image obtained with x-ray microtomography (Zeiss XRadia Versa 510 XRM). Sample diameter = 1 cm. Resolution =11 µm. Credits: Sample produced at the Laboratory for Digital Fabrication, managed by Prof. Sergio Braga, Mechanical Engineering Department, PUC-RIo.
Iron Ore Sinter
Iron ore sinter. The various phases were segmented and color coded. The red lump corresponds to a large particle of primary hematite. Image obtained with x-ray microtomography (Zeiss XRadia Versa 500 XRM).
Peanut
3D visualization of the external and internal features of a peanut. The peanut shell is a biomimetic reference for packaging design. Image obtained with x-ray microtomography (Zeiss XRadia Versa 510 XRM). Sample size = 3 x 1 cm. Resolution = 33 µm. Credits: Profs. Claudia Kayat and Claudio Magalhães, Arts and Design Department, PUC-RIo.
Iron Ore Sinter
Iron ore sinter. Different phases (hematite, magnetite, silicates) are segmented and color coded. Image obtained with x-ray microtomography (Zeiss XRadia Versa 500 XRM). Sample size = 2 cm. Resolution = 20 µm. Credits: Sample provided by Vale. Image acquired at LMPT-UFSC, with Prof. Celso Peres
Polymer Aluminum joint
Polymer Aluminum joint created by friction riveting. Image obtained with x-ray microtomography (Zeiss XRadia Versa 510 XRM). Sample Size = 1.8 x 1.4 cm. Resolution = 27.5 µm. Credits: Sample prepared by the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht (Germany).
Cracks
Cracks in a steel joint obtained by underwater wet welding. Notice the alignment of cracks in a direction which is orthogonal to the welding direction.
Pores
Pores in a steel joint obtained by underwater wet welding are revealed. The pores were detected and color coded by volume, aspect ration and spatial orientation. Notice the characteristic elongated shape and alginment in a direction roughly orthogonal to the welding direction.
Bamboo impregnated with Silver
Bamboo was impregnated with silver nanoparticles, that function as a fungicide. The video shows the bamboo vessels (pink), the parenchyma and sclerenchyma (fibers, orange) and silver particle clusters (yellow).
Iron Ore Pellet
An iron ore pellet is shown, revealing the pore network (pink) and a large crack (yellow). Sample provided by Vale. Pellet diameter = 1 cm. Resolution = 8 µm.
Hybrid Composite
A hybrid polymer matrix composite reinforced by glass and carbon fibers is shown. The heavier and larger (15 µm) glass fibers appear brighter. The lighter and smaller (5 µm) carbon fibers are barely resolved.
