Created in 1988, the Digital Microscopy and Image Analysis Research Group (MicDigi) is linked to the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering (DEQM) at PUC-Rio. It is formed by professors, researchers, technicians, as well as undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, the group is coordinated by Prof. Sidnei Paciornik, with vice-coordination by Dr. Marcos Henrique de Pinho Maurício.

MicDigi works on the development of methods for image processing and analysis applied to the 2D and 3D characterization of materials, using advanced microscopy and tomography techniques. In addition, it develops research and solutions using Machine learning and Deep learning applied to image interpretation and analysis, with a focus on automation, data extraction and microstructural analysis. Using commercial and open source software, the group creates customized routines for the automatic quantification of relevant characteristics.

In addition to research activities, the group operates as a Multi-User Center, making its equipment available to meet the demands of departments and postgraduate programs at PUC-Rio itself, universities in Rio de Janeiro (such as UERJ and UFF), other Brazilian institutions (such as UFRGS and UFPR) and research centers (such as CETEM and CENPES).

MicDigi also maintains partnerships with companies and institutions from different sectors, such as Vale, ArcelorMittal, Pipeway and AXT. It also stands out for its work in the wind energy sector, with collaborations with ABEEÓLICA (Brazilian Wind Energy Association) and the company Aeris. In addition, the group offers training and develops customized solutions for academic and industrial applications.

Those interested in partnerships, research proposals, training, clarification of doubts or in the use of equipment can contact the group's vice-coordinator, Dr. Marcos Henrique de Pinho Maurício.
